“English-Only”: America’s Linguistic Sense of Entitlement

In America, there have been countless instances of “English First” or “English Only” education being pushed onto students. Incidentally, many times racism accompanies the implementation of these policies. It’s understandable why some people may want “English First” education, especially parents who do not speak English: the importance of speaking the most commonly-used language in the country that they live in is undeniable. It’s the same reason why many immigrant parents in the 30s-50s (and even today) didn’t teach their children their native tongues…
